Susan Dierickx

PhD student

Susan Dierickx holds a bachelor in Sociology (Universiteit Gent), graduated as master in Social and Cultural Anthropology in 2010 (Universiteit Leuven), and obtained a master after master in Conflict and Development two years later (Universiteit Gent). After graduations, she joined the Institute of Tropical Medicine in Antwerp where she conducted qualitative and quantitative research in West Africa on two multi-disciplinary projects on (i) the heterogeneity of malaria transmission and (ii) malaria in pregnancy. In October 2015, Susan Dierickx started her research on harmful cultural practices under the supervision of Prof. Dr. Gily Coene (Vrije Universiteit Brussel) and Prof. Dr. Chia Longman (Universiteit Gent). This research project aims to critically explore the concept of ‘harmful cultural practices’ in relation to vaginal practices among sub-Saharan African migrants and minorities in Belgium. She is affiliated with the research groups Center of Expertise on Gender, Diversity and Intersectionality (RHEA), Centre for Ethics and Humanism (ETHU) (both Vrije Universiteit Brussel), and the Center for Research on Culture and Gender (Universiteit Gent)
